“Motion is Lotion” is such a great phrase because even if you haven’t heard it before, right away the meaning is clear: You need to move! It is good for you! But what if you feel so stiff that moving feels uncomfortable – is this still the case?
YES! YES! A thousand times, YES!
When you move, something very important is released in your joints – synovial fluid. It lubricates your joints and also helps deliver important nutrients, keeping them healthy! So if you haven’t moved in a while, it’s no wonder it doesn’t feel very good when you first start. That’s where “motion is lotion” comes in! Keep going and your movements will start to feel more smooth.
Problem Areas and the Problems They Cause
Often when people have an area that’s bothering them, such as a stiff shoulder or hip, they avoid moving it and I can understand the decision to do so. However, the less you move, the stiffer you will feel. So, if this sounds like you I highly encourage you to start doing some gentle movements every day if you want to see an improvement. Please keep in mind, we can’t expect to undo weeks, months, or even years of immobility in a day. Recovery takes time, so be patient with yourself!
Drink Water!
The synovial fluid that helps lubricate your joints is a fluid after all – it’s right in the name! And it is mostly made up of water, so in case you needed another reason why you need to drink water, here it is! If you don’t, your joints will suffer.
Use It Or Lose It
Even if you don’t have a “problem area” you’ll need to stay active to keep it that way! It is recommended that adults get 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week and strength training twice a week. If that sounds overwhelming, start small. Get out for walks when you can, and don’t forget to move your upper body too, particularly your spine and shoulders!
